My name is Shahid Mustafa and I practice regenerative organic agriculture. In 2008, was inspired by a visit to a small homestead farm in Organ, NM that practiced what I was told was the biointensive approach to gardening. The method involved digging 18 to 24 inch beds and adding amendments to the soil to produce nutrient rich vegetables, incorporating small livestock, and composting. Using this approach, I started a garden in a vacant lot in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2010, which later became the Carver Community Garden. We built 8 beds, and were pleasantly surprised with the results of our efforts. In January of 2016 I began farming a 3-acre property in Mesilla, NM just southwest of our old farm near the Rio Grande River. The farm is named Taylor Hood Farms. I am incorporating all that I have learned over the past twelve years into the farm’s development, and I am committed to proving the viability, and sustainability of regenerative organic agriculture. Taylor Hood Farms presently cultivates over 3 acres in El Paso, TX, on which we incorporate about half of in vegetable production per season. We have an aquaponics greenhouse, compost stations, vermiculture (worm) management, seed storing facilities, and outdoor classroom space. We also have chickens, and goats on our farm, whose manure we incorporate into our compost. Through our nonprofit organization DYGUP/Sustain (DYGUP is and acronym for Developing Youth from the Ground Up), We have worked with the science department of Las Cruces High School to implement an environmental literacy curriculum we developed that integrates science and agriculture. We established a 1-acre plot across the street from the High School where students come out to help with all stages of vegetable production and receive a participation credit towards their grade. Through our website we currently operate a Consumer Supported Agriculture (CSA) delivery service which allows subscribers to purchase shares of produce from our farm and have it delivered directly to their homes. Our plan is to create multiple demonstrations of sustainable agricultural practices, become a USDA certified organic farm, and train a new generation of farmers to take part in what will become a burgeoning agrarian society. We hope to become an incubator for regenerative organic farmers, and be an inspiration for farmers to adopt the regenerative organic practice.
